M1 Racing's Horak Gets One Expert-Class Victory
And Earns Quartermaster Hard-Charger Award
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., March 30 - M1 Racing's Jay Horak got his 2015 season in the Pro Mazda Championship presented by Cooper Tires off to a great start over the weekend on the street course in St. Petersburg with a second on Saturday and a victory on Sunday in the series' Expert class.
Horak, from Mesa, Ariz., won the Expert class championship in 2013 driving for Dallas-based M1 Racing. The class is for drivers over the age of 30.
Horak, who drives the AutoEnginuity No. 37, also won the Quartermaster Hard-Charger Award on Sunday. He gained eight spots by starting 17th and finishing ninth overall.
Part of that advancement was due to Horak's quick thinking to avoid a multi-car collision at the start. He set his fastest lap of the race on lap 13 with a 1:15.151 for the 14-turn, 1.8-mile street course. A few seconds later his Expert-class rival, Bobby Eberle, had a problem and Horak vaulted into ninth overall. He chased the eighth-place finisher, Will Owen, until the checkered waved on lap 19.
He finished second in the Expert class division on Saturday with a 15th-place finish overall after starting 17th. His best lap in that race was lap 11, when he turned a 1:16.562.
Horak and the rest of the M1 Racing contingent will try to do even better in the next doubleheader, which is scheduled for NOLA Motorsports Park near New Orleans on April 10-12.
M1 Racing has additional seats available for that weekend and other events for qualified, funded drivers. For more information contact M1 Racing owner Paul Mata at pmata77@gmail.com.
